How to save money traveling between Sheffield and Exeter.
This is an interesting journey with more than two options.
I looked up fares on the 27th Febuary 2013 to travel from Sheffield to Exeter St David's or Exeter Central on Monday the 25th March 2013 and return on Thursday the 28th March 2013
I opted to leave after 09.45 on both the outward and return journey.
The cheapest fare was to come up on a through train via Birmingham journey time Apprx 4 hours was a off Peak return at £123.80 which did seem to be valid on all the trains shown.
The other cheaper way to make this journey is through London.
Fares from Sheffield to London St Pancras are as cheap as £32.00 with an advance return but you are limited to just a few trains but to make the savings this could be worth it there was an even cheaper fare of £27.50 came up but this meant changing at Doncaster in one direction also look at buying singles this could give more scope.
Once in London you have two options one is to travel from London Paddington to Exeter St Davids the other is from London Waterloo to Exeter Central
If you choose to travel from Paddington the cheapest easily useable fare to come up was £78.00 off Peak return these seem to be valid on all the trains that showed. An advance fare of £68.00 came up but this would limit you to particular trains other advance fares were more expensive
Assuming you paid the £32.00 fare from Sheffield to London St Pancras and the £78.00 fare from London Paddington to Exeter St David's the total fare would be £110.00
The saving by traveling via London using Paddington would be
£13.80
Not that great but a saving. Obviously the journey time is longer and you would possibly have the inconvenience of traveling at odd hours to obtain the Cheap Sheffield to London fares.
However if you choose to travel from London Waterloo to Exeter Central the advance return came up at £45.00 although one did come up at £42.00 although this would be limiting.
Assuming you paid the £32.00 fare from Sheffield to London St Pancras and the £45.00 fare from London Waterloo to Exeter Central total cost would be £77.00
The saving by traveling via London and using Waterloo is
£46.80
I have used the cheaper Sheffield to London fare with savings like this you may be able to pay a slightly higher one to make things a bit more conveinient.
The drawback to this saving is the journey time been extended still further.
Please note these are not definitve savings only an example of what you put into your computer fares may be different at different times.
