How to save money traveling between Sheffield and Ipswich.
This is just one example of how you can save money by playing with and splitting your Journey.
I looked at this one on the 8/12/12 as If I was wanting to travel out on the 10/01/13 leaveing Sheffield at or after 9.40am and return 12/01/13 leaving Ipswich after 2.40pm
This is what I found.
The normal off peak return on the whole came up as
£108.50
1 fare did come up at
£85.80
The routes varied some via London.
Some by changing at various stations but centered on passing through Peterborough and avoiding London.
If you think change in London as the route looking up fares for the same days this is what I found
Advance return fares from Sheffield to London St Pancras ranged from £23.00 to £36.00
Off peak returns from London Liverpool St to Ipswich were £37.10
If you paid the Maximum fare by booking the 2 most expensive separate fares via London you would pay £73.10
If you paid the Minimum fare by booking the cheapest fare available from Sheffield to Ipswich you would pay £85.80
Saving by booking two separate fares via London would be £12.70
If you paid the Minimum fare by booking the 2 cheapest separate fares via London you would pay £60.10
If you paid the Maximum fare by booking the most expensive fare available from Sheffield to Ipswich you would pay £108.50
Saving by booking two separate fares via London would be
£48.40

Please note there are drawbacks to paying the cheaper fares via London you will be restricted to using the train you are booked on to and from London at least, and you will have a cross London tube fare to find.
I suspect with the more expensive fares you will be less restricted to trains and by avoiding London no cross London fares to find.
As you can see from this it really does pay to try different options and not accept the first fare to show.
Please note these are not definitve savings only an example of what you put into your computer fares may be different at different times.
